Exponential Equations
An equation involving expressions of the form kxk^{x}kx is called an exponential equation where kkk is a constant. In exponential equations the exponents are variables. We will discuss only those exponential equations which can be reduced to quadratic form.
Exponential equations reducible to quadratic form are of the type:
We use the substitution kx=yk^{x} = ykx=y to reduce the above equation to quadratic form. Then we find y and replace it with kxk^{x}kx . In this way, roots of the exponential equations are found.
Solve the following exponential equations
i. 22x−2×2x+1=022x−2×2x+1=02^{2x} - 2 \times 2^{x} + 1 = 022x−2×2x+1=022x−2×2x+1=0
i. 22x−2×2x+1=0→(i)22x−2×2x+1=0→(i)2^{2x} - 2 \times 2^{x} + 1 = 0 \rightarrow (i)22x−2×2x+1=0→(i)22x−2×2x+1=0→(i)
Put 2x=y2^{x} = y2x=y, so 22x=y22^{2x} = y^{2}22x=y2
Replace y by its substitute 2x2^{x}2x
ii. 9x−3x+1−4=09^{x} - 3^{x + 1} - 4 = 09x−3x+1−4=0
ii. 9x−3x+1−4=0→(i)9x−3x+1−4=0→(i)9^{x} - 3^{x + 1} - 4 = 0 \rightarrow (i)9x−3x+1−4=0→(i)9x−3x+1−4=0→(i)
Put 3x=y3^{x} = y3x=y, so 32x=y23^{2x} = y^{2}32x=y2
